However, most cells donât need to make all those proteins. A muscle cell and a skin cell obviously have different functions, and they need different proteins to carry out these functions. As a result, different genes are active in skin cells and muscle cells. Genes that are unnecessary in a particular type of cell are turned off early in development. Even within a certain type of cell, however, different genes may be more or less active at different times.
Gene regulation is the process by which cells turn genes off and on at different times. Regulation is a response to a variety of factors. The processes that prokaryotes and eukaryotes use to regulate genes are different, but basic idea is the same: A protein should only be made when itâs needed.
